Show & Tell Tuesday (The Farmer's Wife)

Show & Tell Tuesday

Today I will share two quilts that are made from the same pattern but look completely different.

I used the book The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt
by Laurie Aaron Hird

The book includes letters written by farmer's wives in 1922.  These letters inspired the 111 six-inch blocks in the quilt.  The book comes with a CD to print many of the templates used in the quilt.

The Farmer's Wife
(Civil War Repro Fabric)

I began my "Farmer's Wife" journey in November 2009.

I joined a Block of the Month from
 Homestead Hearth.

Over the next 24 months I received fabric to complete all of the 111 blocks in this quilt.

The letters printed in the book are fascinating reading.  "It appeared that the farm women were thrilled with the popular inventions of the day that would make their lives easier:  telephones, automobiles, lighting systems, running water, carpet sweepers and the like.  Nonetheless, they wanted their family life and values to be left alone."

"These articulate, optimistic and visionary farm women of 1922 seemed quite content with their peaceful lives on the farm, spent with their husbands, children, neighbors, books and nature."

The Farmer's Wife
(1930's Repro Fabric)

As I was working on the Civil War repro fabric quilt, I decided to also work on a 1930's repro fabric quilt.

I pulled fabric from my 1930's stash to duplicate the blocks each month.

As I worked on this quilt I counted how many pieces of fabric went into each block (as I am also doing for my Dear Jane quilt.)

Each version of my Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt contains 3,163 pieces of fabric and measures
 82" X 100"!

I know this seems like a lot, but my Dear Jane quilt has almost  5,700!

Until Next Time.....Happy Stitching!!!

Show & Tell Tuesday (Christmas Tree Skirt, Evergreen Table Runner, Oh Christmas Tree, Tis the Season)

Show & Tell Tuesday

Christmas is just around the corner so today I want to share a few of the Christmas items I have made over the years.

Our Christmas Tree Skirt

Until a few years ago we did not have a Christmas tree skirt.  We simply used a red tablecloth to cover the bottom of our tree.  Then in 2013  I decided we needed something quilted.

This tree skirt was made from 61 five-inch charm squares, borders, backing and binding.

It measures 45" square.

Evergreen

In 2011  I took a class at Byrne Sewing Connection in Doylestown, PA.  It was a mystery class and all we were told was to bring five Christmas fabrics that coordinate.

The day consisted of sewing seven steps and the finished product was this pretty Christmas table runner.

The original pattern is called "Christmas is Coming" by Judy Hopkins and the finished runner measures 22" X 72".

Oh Christmas Tree

I made Oh Christmas Tree in 2013.  It is made from 1174 pieces of stash fabric.

It measures 38" X 44" and hangs in our family room during the month of December.

'Tis the Season

I made 'Tis the Season in 2013 from a Turnover and 1 1/2" strips.

It measures 54" X 54".

The following are a few other Christmas projects that I have already blogged about:

A Dresden Christmas

A Baltimore Christmas

My Christmas Hexie Quilt

May the peace of the Christmas season be with all of you!

Show & Tell Tuesday (Carolina Crush & Orca Bay)

Show & Tell Tuesday

December is the month when Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville releases her annual mystery quilt.

This year the mystery is called Allietare and it started the day after Thanksgiving.  Each week Bonnie releases a new clue until the quilt is complete.

This seemed the perfect time to share two past Quiltville mysteries.

Carolina Crush

Carolina Crush was the first Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt in which I participated.

This quilt was originally called Carolina Christmas because Bonnie lives in North Carolina and she used Christmas colors for her very scrappy quilt.

Being new to mystery quilts, I was very reluctant to make my quilt completely scrappy.  I was unsure if I would like a scrappy quilt.

I decided to dive in and give it a try.   As you can tell, I did not make my quilt with red, green and gold like the original quilt, so I decided to change the name from Carolina Christmas to Carolina Crush.  I chose to use scrappy purples and teals, and I kept my black and white constant.

I completed my quilt in 2010 and it measures

94" X 94".

Orca Bay

By the time I started Orca Bay, scrappy quilting was no longer new to me.

I embraced Bonnie's pattern and followed her colors of Red, White, Blue and Black.

Orca Bay was my first attempt at string piecing.  I love how the string blocks look.

I completed Orca Bay in 2014 and it measures

82" X 90".

Until Next Time.....Happy Stitching!!!
