Make-A-List Monday

I recently finished a quilt for our dear friend's first grandchild.

I hope little Lydia gets many years of cuddling with her new quilt.

The Week of March 24, 2014
(in review)

1.  Continue to work on Ryder's Big Boy Bed quilt.

Here is the quilt with borders.

I loaded it on Annie and began to quilt.

I didn't want to quilt over the applique so I quilted around them.  Now I have bubbles on all the applique blocks.  I'm so upset about this.  I am tempted to remove all quilting (a daunting task) and just quilt it edge to edge.  At least I would be sure there would be no bubbles.  I would have to get new backing fabric since I have already trimmed it.

I wonder if I bound it and washed it, if the fabric would shrink enough to take up all the excess in the appliqued blocks?  Unfortunately I preshrunk all the fabric so this is unlikely.

I'm not sure what to do...I just know this has been too much work for me to be so disappointed with it.  I want it to be just perfect for Ryder.  Hopefully I will make the right decision on how to fix this mess.

I thought when I took on this labor of love that it might be a little more than I was capable of...now I am sure of it.

  1. Sorry to hear your quilt for Ryder has disappointed you with the bubbles. It is easy for me to say that he will love the quilt no matter what, as you made it for him. But what to do? I would not take out all the stitching. Perhaps do a filler stitch (like a background cross hatch or pebbles) around each of the appliques to fill in the blank areas. I had a similar problem with a king size quilt and did a soap bubbles type quilting in my puffy areas. It was enough to make you want to cry. But if you finish the job and move on.... It will be loved and used and treasured. Hope this helps, Sharyn!
