Hanging Gardens

I chose a green and purple batik jelly roll to make this pretty quilt designed by Georgette Dell'Orco.  Georgette is the mother of Daniela Stout, the owner of The Cozy Quilt Shop in El Cajon, CA.  I've had the pleasure of visiting her shop the last two times I was in the San Diego area.

 This rather large quilt measures 97" x 97".  It consists of 25 blocks and it was one of Cozy Quilts STRIP CLUB Patterns.  It took approximately 11 yards of fabric to make Hanging Gardens.

I started this quilt in a class at The Village Quilter in Mt. Holly, NJ in 2010.  It is one of my favorite quilts.

Tumbling Blocks

(AKA - A Tumbling We Will Go)

This quilt was made from a free online pattern at HGTV.  

It was designed by Marci Baker.

I used 6 basic colors;  a light, a medium, and a dark of each color. It was made with out set-in seams using Marci's special technique.

The finished quilt measures 45" x 56".

The Week of  August 6, 2012

1.  Attend Ali's shower and present her with her sage green and cream quilt.

When I was presented with a pile of paint chips a few months ago of  various sage greens and creams I challenged myself to find a pattern that would incorporate all the shades and yet still blend together beautifully.

I chose a pattern by Carrie L. Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Company.  The pattern is from her book Spice of Life Quilts.  It is called "Raise the Roof."

I was pleased, and a little surprised, at how well the sage greens all blended together.

The finished quilt measures 88" x 88".

My wishes for the bride (whom I have known for 18 years) and the groom (whom I have known for 25 years) are much love and happiness.

2.  Finish labels for three quilts.  All labels are complete.

3.  Finish the pink and white borders on "Cotton Candy" and start thinking about the backing.  

Cotton Candy was one of the 2011 NJ Shop Hop quilts.  It is completely pieced and ready for quilting.  The pattern calls for a scalloped edge.  Unfortunately I forgot this when I was preparing my binding.  If I choose to do the scalloped edge I will have to remake the binding into a bias binding.

4.  Attend Quilts for Kids at Pennington Quilt Works and turn in the one quilt I finished this month.  There was a small turnout at our monthly sewing day.  A lot of people are on vacation.

5.  Attend Saturday Sampler at Pennington Quilt Works.  I am now ready to work on my blocks for this coming month.

The Week of August 13, 2012

1.  Help my Dear Daughter move into her first apartment.  It is with both sadness and pride that I help my wonderful daughter move away from her childhood home and into her first apartment.

Shea is an extremely responsible young woman, and she is more than ready to spread her wings and fly.  Even so, it doesn't make it any easier for this mom who is watching her youngest leave the nest.  I will MISS HER SO MUCH!

2.  Watch my beloved Mets play the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio.  A side trip to The Fabric Shack, among other Ohio quilt shops, is also planned.

3.  Work on some bindings on quilts that have been quilted for a while.  I have about 15 quilts that need their bindings hand sown down.  I hope to get a few done in the car to and from Ohio.  

With my travels this week and the Big Move I don't plan on getting much sewing done.

Americana

This is a classic Barn Raising Log Cabin Quilt Pattern.  I used a layer cake of Clermont Farms

by Minick & Simpson for Moda Fabrics.

This very patriotic quilt measures 48" X 65".  

Stoneworks

This pretty quilt pattern was inspired by the floor tiles in St. Mark's Church in Venice, Italy.

It was designed by Ann Anderson and features fabric from the Stonehenge Collection by Northcott.  This fabric line is the same one I am using for one of the Saturday Sampler quilts I am doing at Pennington Quilt Works.

This small throw sized quilt measures 47" X 47".  

With the left over fabric I was able to make a table runner.  It is named Venice.

The Week of July 30, 2012

(in review)

1.  Complete piecing "Cotton Candy" and prepare it for quilting.   The quilt top is pieced...I just need to add the borders.  It will have a 1 1/2" white border, a 1" pink border and another wider white border.

2.  Quilt the sage green and cream quilt I am making for my neighbor's wedding shower.  This quilt is done...all it needs is a label.  I will post pictures next week after the shower.

3.  Organize all my goodies from Quilt Odyssey, especially the two quilt projects I started with Bonnie.  Here are pictures of a few things I picked up at Quilt Odyssey.

I have decided to do the two Bonnie Hunter quilts, Tumelo Trails and Smith Mountain Morning, as leader/ender projects to make Bonnie proud.  HaHa!

4.  Spend time with sweet baby Ryder.

OK...I know.  Any excuse to post another picture.

The Week of  August 6, 2012

1.  Attend Ali's shower and present her with her sage green and cream quilt.  I am very happy with the way this quilt turned out.

2.  Finish labels for three quilts.  I need to finish the labels on Ali's & Tim's quilt and the two quilts I will share tomorrow on Show & Tell Tuesday.

3.  Finish the pink and white borders on "Cotton Candy" and start thinking about the backing.  Hopefully I will have this quilt ready for Annie by the end of the week.

4.  Attend Quilts for Kids at Pennington Quilt Works and turn in the one quilt I finished this month.  I am a little disappointed with myself that I only finished one quilt for this wonderful charity.  I will try better for next month.

5.  Attend Saturday Sampler at Pennington Quilt Works.

I know these blocks look a little wonky but they are supposed to.  

As usual, it looks like another busy week.

Foodie Friday

Baked Ziti

Sauce
2     T  Olive Oil
1     Medium Onion, Chopped
3     Cloves Garlic, Sliced
1     Can (28 oz) Whole Tomatoes
1     Can (15 oz) Tomato Sauce
2     T  Tomato Paste
2      t. Sugar
1/4   t. Salt
1/4   t. Black Pepper
1      Can (14.5 oz) Basil-and-Oregano Diced Tomatoes, Drained
1/2   C Fresh Basil Leaves, Chopped

Ziti & Cheese
1     Box (16 oz) Ziti
1     Bag (8 oz) Shredded Part-Skim Mozzarella Cheese
1/4  C Grated Parmesan Cheese


1.  Heat oven to 375 degrees.  Coat a 13x9x2 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

2.  Sauce - Heat oil in a 3-quart saucepan over medium heat.  Add onion and cook 4 minutes.  Add garlic cook another minute.  Stir in whole tomatoes and their juice, breaking tomatoes apart with a wooden spoon or potato masher.  Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, salt and pepper.  Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes.

3.  Remove pan from heat.  Stir in diced tomatoes and basil.

4.  Ziti and Cheese - Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to boiling,  Add ziti; boil 10 minutes, stirring.  Drain and transfer to a large bowl.  Add half the sauce to bowl with ziti.  Stir to coat.  Pour ziti mixture into prepared dish.  Top with remaining sauce and then sprinkle with the cheeses.  

5.  Bake at 375 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes, until bubbly and lightly browned.  Cool 10 minutes.

Serve with a salad and bread.
